A New York Chapter workshop

The school year is about to start! Now is the time for self care as we end summer vacation and return to a busy season. As musicians and music teachers, we work on performing and teaching both accurately and artistically. Those of us with Dalcroze training may be more aware of our mind-body connection as it pertains to music. However, Leslie Upchurch has taken her awareness a step further by studying the art of presenting Sound Baths. A discussion will follow on how to use some principles of Sound Bath in Dalcroze and other music classes.

What is a Sound Bath?

A guided meditation with musical and some verbal guidance. Verbal guidance is general, not attached to any belief or tradition.

What type of sounds?

A bit of piano improvisation, some percussion such as cymbals and chimes, and crystal bowls.

What do I do to prepare?

Wear clothing you are comfortable lying down in. Bring a yoga mat and optional small pillow. (There may be a few mats available.) chairs will be available if lying on the floor is problematic.

Leslie first experienced Sound Baths at Carnegie Mellon University where she is on the faculty of the Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center. Carnegie Mellon’s music school regularly offers sessions to students to assist them with reducing performance anxiety. The protocol Leslie learned has been studied by and used in medical facilities in Pittsburgh. Sessions are offered at the Highmark Center for Health, Wellness and Athletics on the Carnegie Mellon University Campus.
